Daniel Hahn’s blog on BookTrust: Translated Fiction (see Weblog for mid-October 2008) has three entries so far: September 29, was “What this blog is for”; the second, October 7, was “Anticipating general problems”; the third, October 10, wondered “To footnote or not to footnote.” In his entry for October 7, he wonders how to deal with “the cultural particularities of the Angolan setting, a setting we have to assume unfamiliar to most Anglophone readers. What to do with the shorthand references to local dishes, for example.” A familiar question for J-E translators. How do we deal with it? Japanese food is not so difficult, since the cuisine is familiar to much of the world, but sometimes we have to figure out how to “explain” some edible item. Lots of food for thought!
