I’d like to vote for both as long as the announcements are
likely to be of interest to more SWET members than the poster alone and
or one or two people.

I second Holly’s comment in that I voted “Yes to both” assuming that any announcements from other organizations would be related to writing, editing and translating, with the caveat she mentions. Unrelated announcements, and even repeated self-advertisements, don’t really belong on the SWET list, IMO. As Holly mentions, I also feel that any such announcements be aimed at the greater good or wider audience. And I’d feel comfortable with the list moderator(s) making the decision which are & which aren’t related.

Now, if spammers start getting sly and we start seeing ads or announcements like “Translation/Editing needed for new Cialis/Viagra pills” or messages announcing that work is needed on some “URGENT documents from the National Bank of Dubai”, then I think we might need to reconsider this policy.

But until then, I myself wouldn’t mind seeing such announcements, again as long as they’re pretty closely related to what we’re all here for.
