(Please note that this is a TUJ course, not an event sponsored by SWET.)

Instructor: Dianne Highbridge

Place: Temple University Japan (Continuing Education)
Dates: October 14, 21, and 28
Time: 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
Number of Participants: 10
Sign-up: by September 11 (Note: this is the official sign-up date for regular fall courses; later sign-ups will be accepted for the workshop if places are still available).

To apply: please submit a brief essay, telling something of yourself and your hopes for your writing. (This should be no longer than about 400 words, and sent by e-mail to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or faxed to 03-5441-9822).

We will look at ways of writing about characters (fiction) and real people, including oneself (non-fiction) alone and in relation to others. We will also consider what it means to inhabit a fictional character, and questions of memory, subjectivity and truth in non-fiction, as well as practising some of the skills (including description and monologue/dialogue) essential to bringing a fiction or non-fiction story to life for the reader. Writers will have the opportunity to work on a short scene from a story or memoir (or other non-fiction form), and to share their work with the group. The instructor will provide personal editorial advice. For those considering trying to publish their writing in the future, the workshop also offers the chance to talk about getting started, including practical concerns: submissions, agents, editors. The atmosphere of this intensive workshop will be relaxed, energizing and encouraging.

The instructor, Dianne Highbridge, is an Australian author living and working in Japan. She has published two novels, A Much Younger Man and In the Empire of Dreams (both Soho Press, New York). A Much Younger Man has been translated into Japanese and other languages. She has recently completed a third novel. She has published a variety of journalism in the U.S., Australia and Japan, including literary criticism and a books column for the Daily Yomiuri, and previously taught Creative Writing at TUJ for three years.
