One, two, three . . .
Translator and codesmith Ryan Ginstrom (website | blog) just announced a new online tool for counting words in HTML, XML, CSV, and text files. Translators (and editors) who need to know how many words there are so they know how much to charge for them might want to add this one to their box of tools: Online wordcount tool.
The problems that most people have when trying to get an accurate count of text units aren’t actually with simple files like the formats this tool can handle (for now), but with Excel files where things are hidden away in countless cells, or Powerpoint files where text can be concealed in all sorts of ways. For those more complicated documents, Ryan has also created CountAnything. You’ll need a computer running Windows to check it out.
