International Thriller Japantown Receives Warm Welcome

When Barry Lancet launched the first in what he envisioned as a mystery/thriller series exploring the high culture and low underbelly of Japan, he had no idea what to expect. By the first week of publication, Japantown was scheduled for a fourth printing and had been optioned for a TV series by J. J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions of Lost fame. By the end of the year, Suspense Magazine had selected the novel as a Best Debut of 2013, and renowned mystery critic Oline E. Cogdill did the same in her annual Best of the Year Roundup.

Japantown opens in San Francisco’s Japantown with the perfect murder and one clue that no one can read—a Japanese kanji character. The SFPD call in American Japan-expert Jim Brodie to help decipher the writing, but before long the mysterious killer he’s tracking turns the tables and begins tracking Brodie and his daughter—from San Francisco to Tokyo.

Barry Lancet has lived in Japan for more than 25 years. His former position as an editor at one of the nation's largest publishers gave him access to inner circles in traditional and business fields most outsiders are never granted, along with an insider's view that informs his writing.
