Among writings on translation, its process and practice, William Weaver's essay on "The Process of Translation," included in The Craft of Translation edited by John Biguenet and Rainer Schulte (Chicago University Press), and the lively interview published in The Paris Review (Spring 2002) “The Art of Translation III” are inspiring. What he says applies to any language pair—the Japanese-to-English pair with which most of us are most closely involved included.
"Weaver helped to bring the art of translation out of obscurity and give it a literary credence and recognition," writes Ian Thomson in The Guardian.
